How To Charge Tariff Fees on Your Wix Website: A Helpful Guide For Your E-Commerce Business

If you sell to customers in the US, you’ve probably already heard the news: the “de minimis” rule has ended.

That means goods imported into the US are no longer exempt from duties under a certain value. From now on, all shipments are subject to tariffs. In our case, as a UK-based company, that’s an additional 10% fee. Not ideal.

But here’s how we’ve managed it on our end: a little helpful guide for charging tariff fees on Wix website orders.

Why This Matters

  • Many couriers now require that you ship DDP (Delivered Duties Paid). In plain English: you, the seller, must pay these tariffs upfront before your goods are delivered.

  • If you don’t, the courier will either refuse the shipment or charge your customer a hefty flat rate on delivery. This can lead to delays, extra costs, or unhappy customers.

  • Building it into your product pricing isn’t always practical, especially if only some of your customers are in the US.

Our Solution FOR U.S. TARIFFS in Wix

We’ve recently set up Wix Functions so that whenever the shipping destination is the United States, an extra 10% fee is automatically added at checkout.

This way:

  • Customers see the charge clearly at the point of order

  • You don’t have to manually calculate or chase tariffs afterwards

  • Orders flow smoothly without customs hold-ups

Here are step-by-step instructions for Wix Functions:

  1. Go to your Wix website dashboard

  2. From the left-hand menu, open 'Automations'

  3. From the dropdown menu, select 'Functions'

  4. In the 'Function Catalogue', find the template for 'Additional Fees'

  5. Click 'Create Function'

  6. Select 'Subtotal Percentage Fee' from the templates list and click 'Use Template'

  7. Between 'INPUT' and 'LOCAL VARIABLE', select the plus icon (+) to add a 'Condition'

  8. From the conditions tab, set 'Criterion 1' to... 'Delivery address country abbreviation' contains 'US'

  9. Make sure your 'LOCAL VARIABLE' fee is set to 10 (percent) - or whatever your country's tariff rate may be

  10. Change the 'LOCAL VARIABLE' name to Tariff Charge - or something similar

  11. Select 'OUTPUT' and set your site's main currency (ours is GBP), then click 'Apply'

  12. Select 'Activate' in the top right-hand corner to make the function live on your site

To check that the Function is working correctly, we recommend adding a dummy order to your cart and adding a random United States region and zip code into the delivery estimation calculator. Your additional charge should show in the basket between the subtotal and delivery rate.

We hope these instructions make sense, but if you need any assistance, we'd recommend contacting Wix Support. You can also find a Wix article explaining Functions here.

Sharing This With You

This tariff change has caused lots of stress and problems. We know many independent creators, makers, and retailers use Wix. That’s why we wanted to share our workaround.

It took a little figuring out as we're not familiar with coding. But it was easier than we first thought, and it saves headaches for both sides of the transaction.

What If You Don’t Use Wix?

If you’re on Squarespace, Shopify, or another e-commerce provider, it’s worth checking with them to see if they offer a similar workaround. Most platforms have some way to add conditional surcharges or use plugins/apps/extensions to handle location-based fees.
